Your First ChatGPT Prompt

Write your first ChatGPT prompt with a simple 4-part formula (task, context, details, format) and learn how follow-ups improve every answer.

What it is

A prompt is the message you send to ChatGPT. The better your prompt, the better the answer. You don't need special words or tricks. A good prompt simply tells ChatGPT what you want, who it's for, and how you want it.

In this lesson you'll write your first real prompt and learn a simple 4-part formula you can use every day.

The 4-part prompt formula

PartQuestion it answersExample
TaskWhat should ChatGPT do?Write a WhatsApp message
ContextWho is it for, and why?To my team, about tomorrow's office holiday
DetailsAnything it must include?Mention that the deadline moves to Friday
FormatHow should it look?Friendly, under 50 words

You don't need all four every time. But adding even one or two turns a vague answer into a useful one.

Step-by-step: send your first prompt

  1. Open chatgpt.com or the app and click New chat.
  2. Click the message box at the bottom.
  3. Type your prompt using the formula above.
  4. Press Enter (or tap the send arrow).
  5. Read the answer, then reply to improve it: "make it shorter", "more formal", "add an example".

Example: weak prompt vs good prompt

Weak prompt:

Write a message about the holiday.

ChatGPT has to guess who it's for, what holiday, and how long. The answer is generic.

Good prompt:

Write a friendly WhatsApp message to my team of 6. Tell them the office is closed tomorrow for Diwali and that the project deadline moves to Friday. Keep it under 50 words and add one emoji.

Now ChatGPT has the task, the audience, the key details and the format. The first answer is usually ready to send.

Follow-up prompts

ChatGPT remembers everything earlier in the same chat, so you can keep improving the answer without repeating yourself:

  • "Make it more formal."
  • "Give me 3 different versions."
  • "Translate it into Hindi."
  • "Explain why you chose that opening line."

Try it yourself

Copy this prompt, fill in the brackets with your own details, and send it:

Write a short email to [who] about [what]. The goal is to [what you want them to do]. Keep it [tone, e.g. polite and friendly] and under [number] words.

Then send one follow-up, such as "Give me a subject line too."

Tips and common mistakes

  • Too short. One-line prompts get one-size-fits-all answers. Add who it's for and the format.
  • Too many jobs at once. Ask for one thing, then follow up. You'll get better results than with one giant prompt.
  • Forgetting the format. Say "in a table", "in 5 bullets" or "under 100 words" and ChatGPT will follow it.
  • Giving up after one answer. The real power is in the follow-ups.
  • Pasting private data. Leave out passwords, bank details and anything confidential.

Free vs paid

Writing prompts works the same on every plan, including Free. Paid plans just let you send more messages and use stronger models for hard tasks.

FAQ

What is a prompt in ChatGPT?

A prompt is the message or instruction you type into ChatGPT. It can be a question, a task or a request, written in normal language.

How do I write a good ChatGPT prompt?

Tell ChatGPT the task, who it is for, any details it must include, and the format you want, such as "under 100 words" or "in a table". Then use follow-up messages to improve the answer.

Do I need special keywords to use ChatGPT?

No. Plain, clear language works best. Being specific about what you want matters more than any special words.

Can I ask ChatGPT to change its answer?

Yes. Reply in the same chat with what you want changed, for example "make it shorter" or "more formal", and ChatGPT will rewrite it.
