ChatGPT Sign Up and Login

Create a free ChatGPT account on the web, Android, iPhone or desktop in two minutes, and turn on multi-factor authentication.

What it is

You can try ChatGPT without an account, but signing up for a free account unlocks more: your chat history is saved, you can upload files, use memory and projects, and switch between devices. Signing up takes about two minutes.

You can sign up with a Google, Microsoft or Apple account, or with any email address.

Sign up on the web

  1. Go to chatgpt.com in any browser.
  2. Click Sign up (top right on desktop).
  3. Pick a method: Continue with Google, Continue with Microsoft, Continue with Apple, or type your email address.
  4. If you used email, create a password, then open your inbox and enter the verification code or click the link OpenAI sends you.
  5. Enter your name and date of birth, then click Agree.
  6. You land on the chat screen. You're in.

Tip: Using "Continue with Google" is the quickest way in, and you don't need a new password. Just remember which method you used, because you must log in the same way next time.

Sign up on Android or iPhone

  1. Open the Google Play Store (Android) or App Store (iPhone).
  2. Search for ChatGPT and install the app whose developer is OpenAI. Many fake look-alike apps exist, so check the developer name.
  3. Open the app and tap Sign up (or Continue with Google / Apple).
  4. Follow the same steps as on the web.

Install the desktop app

OpenAI also makes apps for Mac and Windows. Download them from OpenAI's official download page, open the app and log in with the same account. The desktop app adds a keyboard shortcut so you can open ChatGPT from anywhere on your computer.

Log in and log out

  • Log in: go to chatgpt.com, click Log in, and use the same method you signed up with.
  • Log out: click your profile picture or name (bottom left on the web), then Log out.

Make your account safer

Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) so nobody can get in with just your password. Open Settings, go to Security, and turn on multi-factor authentication. You will scan a QR code with an authenticator app, such as Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator.

Example

Priya signs up on her laptop with "Continue with Google". Later she installs the Android app, taps "Continue with Google" again, and sees all her chats from the laptop. Same account, same history, on both devices.

Try it yourself

After signing up, send your first message to check everything works:

Hi! I just created my account. Give me 3 simple things I can try with ChatGPT today as a beginner.

Tips and common mistakes

  • "Account not found" error: you probably signed up with a different method. Try Google, Microsoft, Apple and email one by one.
  • No verification email: check your spam or promotions folder, and wait a couple of minutes before asking for a new code.
  • Age: you must be at least 13 to use ChatGPT, and users under 18 need permission from a parent or guardian.
  • One account is enough. You can use the same account on every device.

Free vs paid

Creating an account is free, and you don't need a credit card. You only pay if you choose to upgrade later. See ChatGPT Plans Explained.
