Learn what ChatGPT is, who makes it, what it can and cannot do, and how to start using it for free.
What it is
ChatGPT is an AI chatbot made by OpenAI, a US company based in San Francisco. You type (or say) a question or a task in plain language, and ChatGPT replies in seconds, a bit like chatting with a very fast, well-read assistant.
It was released to the public on November 30, 2022, and it is now one of the most used apps in the world. Behind the chat window is a family of AI models called GPT. These models learned language patterns from a huge amount of text, which is how ChatGPT can write, explain and answer in a natural way.
You can use ChatGPT for free on the web at chatgpt.com, on Android and iPhone, and in desktop apps for Mac and Windows.
What you can do with ChatGPT
- Write: emails, essays, social posts, ad copy, cover letters
- Explain: a hard topic, a confusing document, a line of code
- Summarise: long articles, PDFs and meeting notes
- Brainstorm: business names, video ideas, gift ideas, study plans
- Translate: between English, Hindi and many other languages
- Search the web: get current answers with links to sources
- Work with files and images: upload a PDF, a spreadsheet or a photo and ask about it
- Create images: describe a picture and ChatGPT draws it
- Talk out loud: use voice mode on your phone, hands-free
How it works, in one minute
- You type a message, called a prompt.
- ChatGPT reads your prompt plus the rest of the conversation.
- The AI model predicts the most useful reply, word by word.
- You reply back to refine it: shorter, simpler, more formal, add an example.
That last step matters most. ChatGPT is a conversation, not a search box. The best results come from asking follow-up questions.
Example
A student types this prompt:
Explain photosynthesis like I'm 12, in 5 short bullet points.
ChatGPT replies with five simple bullets about how plants use sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to make food. The student then asks: "Now give me 3 quiz questions on it." ChatGPT remembers the topic and writes the quiz.
Try it yourself
Open chatgpt.com and paste this prompt. Change the topic to anything you are learning right now.
Explain [your topic] in simple words. Then give me one real-life example and one common mistake beginners make.
What ChatGPT is not good at
- It can be wrong. ChatGPT sometimes gives confident answers that are false. AI people call this hallucination. Check important facts, numbers and quotes.
- It is not a person. It does not know you, and it does not have feelings or opinions of its own.
- It is not a professional. Use it to understand legal, medical or money topics, but make real decisions with a qualified expert.
- Don't share secrets. Avoid pasting passwords, bank details or private customer data.
Tips and common mistakes
- Be specific. "Write an email" gets a generic email. "Write a polite 80-word email to my landlord asking to fix the kitchen tap this week" gets a usable one.
- Give context. Tell ChatGPT who it is for and why.
- Don't accept the first answer. Ask it to fix, shorten or rewrite.
- Start a new chat for a new topic, so old details don't confuse the answer.
Free vs paid
You can do everything in this lesson on the Free plan. Paid plans (Go, Plus, Pro and Business) give you more messages, stronger models and extra tools such as Deep Research and Agent. See ChatGPT Plans Explained for the full breakdown.
